So unfortunately I am forced to take down one of my favourite pieces I have done because one of the images I used wasn't "stock." It belonged to Raphael Lacoste, so I contacted him and asked permission telling him I'd of course leave him credit on the submission page. However he denied my permission so I have to take the piece down. I understand that he probably put hours into the piece, and he never said it was a "stock", but I just never understood the harm of using other peoples work in yours if your doing a photo manip. They are still getting credit for their piece, they are getting more publicity and basically being flattered by the artist. I mean sure it would be a different story if I was selling the piece, but I'm simply putting it up for display for others to view and enjoy, and I guess some people just can't tolerate that. It's really a shame, but what can you do? Nothing. Oh well, tough luck for me I guess

well, to be honest I wouldn't feel much flattered either if someone takes one of my images and cuts parts of it to paste it into his own work.
Imagine I'd take one of your works, add some minor touch ups and call it photomanipulation. And now imagine it gets way more attention than yours. First, that's not fair in any way. Second, it's not really your own work because you used something someone else made before, with a lot of hours of work spent into it. Third, if everyone kept doing this it would reflect badly on the whole gallery of photomanipulation. It's an independent style of art and should not be flooded by works which aren't any better than rips.
